Virtual PSA Holiday Student Social – Jan 2

Dear PSA students/post docs/technicians,

is more networking one of your resolutions for 2021?  If yes, you already have an opportunity to do so on January 2nd! If not, then you can still join us and tell us what your algae and non-algae related resolutions are. Come celebrate the winter holidays with old and new friends – and feel free to invite others. The more the merrier! We are planning on some ice-breakers and some games to get to know each other (or re-connect).

Please register here.

We look forward to seeing you!

Virtual Fall Student Social - Oct 24

Dear all,

We are planning our first virtual fall student social on Oct 24 at 4-6 EST (3-5 CT, 1-3 PT) and would like to welcome any algal-minded student and friends from other related/overlapping fields (Postdocs, recently graduated, lab technicians are more than welcome to join as well). Please forward this invitation to anyone who may be interested, especially if PSA may be a society for them to join.

Attendance is not necessary for the full 2 hours – and may well go beyond 2 hours, if we are up for it!

We have some fun activities scheduled:

  • Costume/spooky zoom background competition (during the first hour) à if inspired, not required

  • And/or algae-themed treat competition (during the first hour, needs to be ready to be shown off) – if inspired, not required

  • Break-out rooms to get to know each other

  • A version of Pictionary with algae/fall/Halloween words that we can all play through the internet together

Please register here.

We are looking forward to talking algae, hanging out and seeing what everyone cooks/bakes/dresses up as. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!

AFS Climate Ambassador Program

The American Fisheries Society is launching a Climate Ambassador Program to provide a specialized communication skills training program that focusses on climate change. Ambassadors will apply this training to inform and educate others about climate change and the impact on aquatic environments. Founded on the latest research on science communications, this in-depth, interactive training program will provide the tools for fisheries scientists to more effectively communicate with thought leaders, journalists, stakeholders, and lay audiences. We are seeking passionate and dedicated aquatic scientists that want to reach a variety of audiences and expand their thinking on the impacts that humans have on our aquatic environments. AFS membership is a prerequisite to admittance to the program, but non-members may apply. Learn more about the program. Contact Drue Winters for further information.
