Phycologist Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) La Verne, CA
MWD has posted a position for a skilled phycologist to support a comprehensive program to evaluate and manage algae problems in source waters. MWD needs a phycologist with practical taxonomic knowledge, lab skills (isolation and culturing of algae), a thorough knowledge of freshwater algae ecology, and practical experience with field studies including nutrient loading and dynamics, and knowledge of the basic limnological processes that drive algal ecology. Knowledge of taste and odor producing algae, especially those producing 2-methyl isoborneol and geosmin is important as is working knowledge of toxin producing algae.
MWD was created by the state to deliver water great distances to southern California, largely from two sources, the Colorado River and the Bay Delta in northern California. MWD supplies raw and finished water to 18 million people. The position is very challenging and interesting, with a response mode (rapidly evaluate problem algae events, develop management strategies, implement strategies) and a research mode to develop long-term strategies to reduce algae problems. Job Announcement: 5716 LY.
Application Filing Period: May 5, 2008 to May 27, 2008 (no exceptions)
Job Hotline: 1-800-540-6311

Senior Analytical Chemist
Job Type: Permanent Location: Melbourne, FL
Did you know that most of the oil we extract from the ground is made up of algae that has been dead for thousands of years?
Did you also know that by 2030, the world will require an additional 500 billion gallons of oil?
In September of 2006 our well-funded client formed a company that will forever change the complexion of the petrochemical industry. Instead of waiting around for thousands of years for dead algae to produce oil, they are utilizing a patented strain of micro-algae in conjunction with a proprietary modular cultivation process that allows them to extract biofuel while the algae is still alive. This proven technology creates 200 times more energy per acre than traditional biofuel crops and produces renewable feedstock oils for use in applications ranging from transportation fuels, heating oils, plastics, food and oil. These technologies place them in a leading position to address an ever increasing multi-hundred billion dollar global market for sustainable and affordable sources of petroleum-derived products. Our client currently seeks a Senior Analytical Chemist to join the R&D team and develop analytical methods and laboratory analysis of bio-organic compounds.
The Senior Analytical Chemist will:
Conceptually design and control the quality of chemical processes
Organize and supervise lab scientists and technicians in multiple locations
Provide leadership to all lab personnel so that they deliver very rapid turnaround of analytical results to process development teams in multiple locations
Generate, analyze, and interpret test results
Generate and present reports to scientists, engineers, and managers
Design and analysis in field facilities
Find and supervise appropriate outside vendors and contractors
Outstanding performance in this position requires:
Familiarity with algae and microbiology
Strong knowledge of chemical process engineering and process flow design
Proficiency in operating scientific equipment
Supervisory skills in a laboratory environment (preferably in multiple lab locations)
Qualifications (all of these are absolutely essential):
