PSA Annual Meeting 2006
Juneau, Alaska 7 - 12 July
Meeting Program
The 2006 annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America will be held July 7-12 at the
Centennial Hall Convention Center in Juneau, Alaska.
The Northwest Algal Symposium will meet
in conjunction with PSA. The University of Alaska Southeast is a meeting
sponsor and is hosting the opening mixer.

deadline was May 15th.
Note that many of the recreational field trips have deadlines. The mid-meeting phycological trips had a deadline of May 1st to make their minimum.
Registration fees for the entire meeting include the opening mixer, PSA auction and mixer, poster session mixer, and the PSA banquet social events.
The early registration fees will be:
- PSA Member Student or Retired: $195
- Regular PSA Member: $295
- Non-member of PSA: $395
- Accompanying Person: $95 (includes all social events)
After the early registration deadline (including on site registration) there will be an additional fee of $50 for
full meeting registration. There will be a
one-day registration rate of $100 available on site but this will not
include social events. Individuals may join or renew their PSA memberships on-line at

Posters There is no limit to the number of presentations by others that one may co-author. Posters can be up to 38 inches (.96 m) tall by 58 inches (1.47 m) wide (i.e, landscape or horizontal format.)
Hotel Information: There are a several hotels of varying price range within a few block radius of the Centennial Hall Convention Center.
Information on hotels including pricing is available HERE. Participants will need to make their own hotel
reservations but the PSA Program Director will help match up individuals wishing to share a room.
Travel Information: Juneau can be reached by air or ferry. Details are available HERE.
Scientific Program:
In a new meeting format, PSA will sponsor four sessions with Plenary talks and associated mini-symposia with two or three participants
identified by the Plenary speakers. Contributed papers related to the mini-symposia topics will be solicited and scheduled in "featured
contributed talk" sessions immediately following each mini-symposium. The sessions and invited speakers for 2006 are HERE.
For Students:
- This meeting will be the first for the new student Poster Award competition. All student members of PSA are eligible for this
award. Click HERE for eligibility criteria and rules. Posters can be up to 38 inches (.96 m) tall by 58 inches (1.47 m) wide (i.e, landscape or horizontal format.)
- Student members of PSA presenting talks on complete or nearly complete projects are eligible for the Bold Award. Click HERE for eligibility criteria and rules.
- Travel funds are available to PSA student members through the Hoshaw Travel Awards. Information on how to apply is available HERE.
Workshop on Algae and the Broader Impacts of Science:
PSA will sponsor a special workshop to provide phycologists access to information and resources about the types of activities that meet the requirement for "Broader Impacts" of our science, particularly in the context of NSF and other funding agencies requirements. This will include presentations and discussions by current and former NSF Program Officers and by other phycologists who have successfully incorporated broader impacts of algae in their funded programs. Social Program:The opening mixer is being sponsored by the University of Alaska Southeast and will be held on Friday evening, 7 July, at the University's Auke Lake campus (transportation from the hotels will be provided). Saturday night will feature the always popular PSA Auction and Mixer at Centennial Hall Convention Center (site of the scientific program). On Monday night (following the day of field trips) there will be a Poster Session and Mixer, also at Centennial Hall. The meeting will feature a somewhat informal, but very "Alaskan," banquet at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake on Tuesday evening. The Salmon Bake is in a beautiful spot alongside a stream with a small waterfall that is likely to have salmon running.
Field Trips:
A wide variety of optional field trips will be available before, during, and after the meeting. Note that many of the recreational FIELD TRIPS had an April 1st deadline to meet the minimum number of participants. Also, the mid-meeting phycological trips had a deadline of May 1st to make their minimum. Options include accompanying persons trips each day of the scientific presentations, intertidal and freshwater collecting trips mid-meeting, and a
post-meeting collecting trip to the open coast (Sitka area). Field trip registration was via the on-line meeting registration web site.
