Ideas for PSA 50th Anniversary Celebration

Bruce Parker was appointed chairman of the 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee (1993) to recommend special activities for the program, which hopefully will be held at Asilomar, Monterey, CA (1996 [Editor's note: The meeting will be held on the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz.]). In 1994, members were appointed to the committee, namely Richard Norris, Richard Starr, Janet Stein-Taylor, Mike Wynne, and Annette Coleman, Ralph Lewin, and Patricia Walne.
Many suggestions have been received from PSA members:

  1. Historical-Persons, Places, Pageants of the Past [slides, videos, tape recordings, poster displays, special historical session similar to the one in 1977-Santa Barbara].
  2. Phycological "Phamily" Tree [showing the major professors and their students, etc., - to be updated and displayed].
  3. Symposia [numerous ideas, the most popular - The Future (Phuture) of Phycology: Optimism and Pessimism.
  4. Special "Collectibles" (T-shirts, sweat shirts, watches, etc. - 50th (gold color emphasized).
  5. A 50th publication (History and Future, Bibliographies of Select Famous Phycologists).
  6. Lecture and field trip to the famous Middle Reef of Moss Beach.

The 50th committee wants to consider all ideas and ultimately recommend the best possible program of activities for our 1996 celebration. Please send your ideas to Bruce Parker or other members of the committee. Suggestions from students and younger phycologists are encouraged. The 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee will present the collection of ideas along with the membership's wishes and its recommendations at the Brechenridge, Colorado, 49th PSA meeting.
