Report on 16th annual Southeaster Phycological Colloquy

The 16th annual meeting of the Southeastern Phycological Colloquy, hosted by Jay Pinckney and Hans Paerl, was held at the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, NC on 30 September - 2 October 1994. The colloquy, sponsored by the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and the Institute of Marine Sciences, brought together a mix of local, regional, and international phycologists to present their work on a variety of topics. The casual setting of this regional meeting fostered open discussions and interactions between colleagues and old friends. There were 36 registered participants (both students and professionals) with 12 companions (spouses, friends, etc.). Papers (16) were presented in a diversity of areas including systematics, evolution, morphology, physiology, behavior, ecology, and biogeography. Social events included a delicious seafood cookout, smorgasbord banquet, and field trips. Rick Searles and Greg Cronin led the field excursions to local algal habitats. The invited banquet speaker was Randy Alberte, who gave a thought-provoking presentation on "New Insights into the Role of Genetic Structure of Marine Macrophyte Populations on Ecosystem Stability".

Reid Wiseman will host the 17th annual meeting at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC.
