News of Colleagues

Chuck Amsler has taken a job in phycology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and he writes:

I'm settling into teaching. I was off last quarter since it was my first and because I was in Antarctica for part of it working on sea-ice diatoms that produce an antifreeze-like compound. It was the first time I've ever cultured diatoms on purpose. It went well and I had a good time. I was at McMurdo, which was new to me and very different from Palmer, where Maggie and I have worked before. Anyway, I'm doing a cell bio course for juniors and seniors. It is only one course, but there are four hours of lecture per week so I'm pretty busy writing lectures. In the spring I'll do Experimental Phycology and in the fall probably Intro. Microbiology. I'm managing to get a little research done but not a lot at the moment.

My wife, Maggie, taught Intro Botany at a small college in the Fall (no, she didn't know she was a botanist either 8^). She just started full-time as natural history collections registrar for a local science museum that is about to build a multi-million-dollar new facility and undergo a big expansion. She has really enjoyed the job so far. We live about 20-25 min south of campus (as long as 40 min at a really bad rush hour). After Chicago -- especially Maggie's Forest Park to Lake Forest run -- that seems like almost nothing. Still, I'm further out than anyone else in the department faculty. We have a little place on a wooded lot on top of a ridge that we really love. It is well worth the drive. My new address is:
