The Way Things Are Going These Days
Every year, certain marine biology students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have to take a so-called comprehensive examination, for which questions are submitted by members of the faculty. This year I submitted three questions dealing with marine plants, at about Cambridge undergraduate level (seaweed zonation on the shore, salt balance in sea grasses, pigmented and colorless phytoplankton). The examiners chose not to include any, because, since such subjects are no longer taught at Scripps, it would be unfair to expect the students to know about them. Hm!
