Harmful Algal Bloom
The Scientific Committee on Oceanographic Research (SCOR) and the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) will co-sponsor a workshop on "The Physiological Ecology of Harmful Algal Blooms" at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research from May 27-June 6, 1996. The ASI will bring together scientists and students from many countries who are interested in assessing the present understanding of fundamental physiological and ecological issues underlying harmful algal blooms ("red tides"), identifying inadequacies, impediments, and areas for future research, and the advancement and dissemination of new approaches and technologies. Deadline for application: January 1, 1996.

Asian Pacific Phycological Forum
The first Asian Phycological Forum will be held July 22-26, 1996 at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. The Forum is to be held every three years and falls on the year between The International Seaweed Symposium and the International Phycological Congress. Professor Robert J. King, University of New South Wales, kindly offered to organize the First Asian Pacific Phycological Forum in Sydney, Australia, in July 1996. I hope to see you there. The Forum was organized by Asian phycologists at a series of meetings in Korea and Japan between 1989 and 1993. In 1993, the participants agreed to establish The Asian-Pacific Phycological Association as the organizing body of The Asian Pacific Phycological Forum.

International Diatom Symposium
The 14th International Diatom Symposium will be held in Tokyo (National Olympic Memorial Youth Center) September 2-8, 1996. In accordance with the decision of the general meeting at the previous Italy Symposium, the Japanese Society of Diatomology and the International Society for Diatom Research cordially invite you to attend the Symposium. Papers concerning all aspects of diatom research are welcome for both oral and poster presentations. Rather than a few large formal workshops, we would prefer numerous smaller informal discussions. Two evenings (3 and 4 September) will be reserved for the workshops. Mid-week and post-symposium excursions are planned for participants.
