The Botanical Society of America is accepting nominations for the Darbaker Prize in Phycology. This award is presented for meritorious work in the study of microscopical algae. The Darbaker Award Committee will base its judgment primarily on papers published by the nominee during the last two full calendar years (1994-95). The award is limited to residents of North America and only papers published in the English language will be considered. A monetary prize is presented to the recipient at the BSA society banquet during the annual meeting.

Student Programs

The Grants and Fellowship Committee the Phycological Society of America announces three programs that support graduate student members of the society for 1996. These include the Croasdale fellowships, Grants-in-Aid of Research and the Hoshaw Travel Awards. Summaries of the programs follow. Although some of the deadlines will have passed by the time this issue of the Newsletter arrives, notices have been posted on the PSA internet list and deadlines will be approximately the same times next year.

Croasdale Fellowships

The Hannah T. Croasdale Fellowships are designed to encourage graduate students to broaden their phycological training by defraying the costs of attending phycology courses at biological field stations. The purpose of the award is to broaden phycological training, not necessarily to further research goals. Study at field stations associated with universities other than the student's own are especially encouraged. Awards are made directly to the student in amounts up to $500.00 each. The deadline for submission of the application and supporting letter is March 1,1996. Notification of the awards will be given by April 1. Note: Fellowship support to attend technique courses should be requested from the Grants-in-aid of Research Program.

Grants-in-Aid of Research

Awards are made in amounts up to $500.00 by the Phycological Society of America in support of graduate student research in any area of phycology. Awards are intended to enable the student to accomplish work otherwise not possible. Awards are made directly to the student. No part of the award may be used to pay indirect costs to the applicant's institution. Selection of recipients will be based primarily on the applicant's research proposal and two supporting letters. Additional criteria will include evidence of past research achievements and the perceived future of the applicant as a researcher. In the course of a student's graduate education, no more than two GIA grants will be awarded. Stipends are not funded. Travel to scientific meetings should be requested from other PSA programs. Tuition and expenses for taking critical techniques courses not available at the home institution will be considered. Applicants must include a brief research proposal, a proposed budget and two letters of recommendation. The deadline for the completed applications plus supporting letters is April 15, 1996 and notification will be by May 30. If an earlier notification is required for acceptance into a summer course or workshop, the applicant should submit the application with a brief explanation and meet the deadline for the Croasdale fellowship (March 1).

The Hoshaw Travel Awards

These awards are to help students with their travel expenses to the annual PSA meeting. All other factors equivalent, students who will present their research at the meeting (lecture or poster) will be given priority. Students wishing to be considered for a Hoshaw Travel Award should complete the application by March 29, 1996. Successful applicants will be notified prior to the meeting and the awards will be presented at the meeting.
