CALL FOR DONATIONS FOR THE PHYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL AUCTION

The 1996 annual auction for the PSA Endowment will be held at the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the PSA in Santa Cruz, CA. The purpose of the Auction is to raise funds for the Hoshaw Travel Award Fund. This fund is used to provide travel grants for students to attend the PSA annual meeting. The Auction also provides an opportunity for phycologists to exchange items of phycological interest.

In the past auction items have included: algal jewelry (pins, earrings, tie tacks, necklaces, belt buckles), books about algae including newly published books, and phycological classics, kelp baskets, seaweed wreaths, photographs of algae, photographs of phycologists, sculptures of algae, dinoflagellate prints, boxer shorts decorated in an algal motif, diatom pillows, note cards decorated with pressed algae, pressed and framed algae, pressed algal specimens to be used in classes, samples of commercially available algal products, plates from Prescott's monographs on desmids, original Prescott pastels, coffee mugs with algal themes, T-shirts from various phycological groups, lamps made of EM negatives (glass) of algae, algal posters, algal coasters, living pet algae, phycological rugs, crate labels, etc. The list goes on and on. There are also phycological reprints for sale.

It is time to start thinking about what you can donate to the 1996 Auction. As you can see the possibilities are endless. All items will be accepted. Let's make the 50th Anniversary Meeting Auction the best ever!! If you are planning to attend the meeting, please bring your items with you. Otherwise please let me know so we can work out a transport plan. THANK YOU!!

Newsletter Subscriptions

Members of the Phycological Society of America receive the Newsletter as one of the benefits of membership. To join PSA, contact the Phycological Society of America, Membership Office, P.O. PSA PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Solicits Publication Ideas

The PSA publication committee solicits and coordinates non-journal publications of interest to members of The Society. As the new Chair of this committee, I invite anyone to make suggestions for possible PSA publications, for consideration by the committee. For example, the Phycological Biographies project is scheduled for completion before the 1996 annual meeting at Asilomar. Other publications currently under consideration include

  1. A Catalog of Strains for the Provasoli-Guillard National Center for Culture of Marine Phytoplankton (CCMP),
  2. A set of three "Keys to the Genera of Marine Phytoplankton; to Seaweeds; and to Fresh Water Algae."
